Although the department is very focused on academic matters we also like to show our support for community projects and local sport events.

Black Friday was initiated to highlight rape awareness and when a request was made to all NMMU staff to support this initiative we as a department jumped at the chance. All employees were encouraged to wear black. Rape affects everyone, not just women, but also the men who care about the women, friends, and family members who has suffered at the hands of a rapist.

On a lighter note we also showed our support towards NMMU’s rugby team – Madibaz, by wearing the ‘Support your Boytjies” t-shit every Monday. We are proud of the rugby team for making it in to the final. They did a great job this year and we cannot wait to see what they will have in store for us next year.

We also believe in a balanced lifestyle. Some of our staff members took part in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 10 March 2013. This was the 36th Cape Argus Cycle tour. It actually started as an awareness campaign about the lack of bike paths in South Africa. We are proud of Dr Karl van der Merwe and Mr Andrew Murray who were brave enough to take part in the race.
